The official number of dead or missing after the Chinese earthquake has risen to 70,000. Authorities say the number killed is now at least 40,000, with a further 30,000 still missing. With some five-million people left homeless, the race is on to build makeshift camps for those in need. Authorities say they are desperate for more tents, with increasing numbers of people turning up looking for shelter.
The military says it has now reached most of the remote villages cut off by the quake in the province of Sichuan. In one town, grieving parents gathered to criticise local officials over the collapse of a school they say was badly constructed. Nearly every building in the town of Wufu withstood the quake – except the new local primary school. New video footage also shows the panic just minutes after the quake struck.
