There were no concrete deals, but European and Latin American leaders have agreed to do more to tackle rising food prices and global warming. At a summit in Peru, leaders also struggled to agree on trade, and Europe tried to play down the risk of biofuels leading to global hunger.
EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso praised the meeting’s focus, though, saying: “It was a good idea to choose themes such as the fight against poverty and the fight for the environment and against climate change.”
It was also a chance for some leaders to patch up previous differences. As well as meeting the Spanish Prime Minister, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had talks with the German Chancellor. Chavez says he apologised to Angela Merkel for his earlier comment that the political right backing her was “the same movement that supported Hitler”.
