The US President has arrived in Egypt for the final stop of his Middle East tour. George Bush is due to hold talks today with President Hosni Mubarack, as well as the Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
However, observers say there is growing scepticism that Bush can help achieve an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal before he leaves office in January. They say Palestinian leaders are wary of the US leader after he heaped praise on Israel during his recent visit there, but made few references to Palestinian aspirations. He described Israel as a “homeland for the chosen people” and said it could always count on US support against enemies Iran and Hamas.
The White House denies Bush is ignoring the plight of the Palestinians, and says their concerns will be raised in meetings today.
