Tamil Tigers blamed for Colombo attack

Eight police officers and two civilians have been killed in a suicide attack in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. More than 85 people have been injured and taken to hospital. Doctors are warning the death toll may rise.

A motorcycle packed with explosives rammed into a police bus in the supposedly secure high-security district in the centre of Colombo, where the army’s general headquarters and the presidential palace are located.

Security forces are blaming the rebel Tamil Tigers for the attack, but no-one has yet claimed responsibility. In January a six-year ceasefire between the Tigers and the government broke down, and fighting has intensified ever since.
