The US President was expected to hail Israel as a “thriving democracy in the heart of the Holy Land” when he addressed the country’s parliament. George W Bush’s remarks come on the 60th anniversary of Israel’s founding – which Palestinians refer to as the “Nabka” or catastrophe.
Earlier he visited the desert fortress of Masada with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Bush arrived in Israel yesterday in a bid to breathe fresh life into the stalled peace process. He hopes to reach an accord before he leaves office in January – a deadline many have called unrealistic.
