Gaza rocket strike kills Israeli pensioner

Israeli officials say a 70-year-old woman has been killed by a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip. Medics said the woman was hit by shrapnel as she walked to her house and died instantly. The Islamic Jihad militant group said it carried out the attack. It is the second fatal strike on Israel in less than a week, after mortar fire from Gaza killed a man at the Kfar Aza kibbutz last Friday. The rocket landed on the woman’s house in the southern village of Yesha, 15 kilometres from Gaza and further away than the usual sites targeted by militants.

The attack came as Egypt’s chief of intelligence wrapped up talks with Israel about a truce with Hamas, the militant group which controls Gaza. Israel wants the deal to include freedom for a captured soldier and an end to arms smuggling into Gaza.

Israel targets Gaza with frequent air strikes and ground operations in an attempt to stop the rocket attacks.
