Looking arctic cyclones in the eye

Polar scientists have been looking deep inside violent arctic weather phenomena, hoping to improve ways of forecasting notoriously unpredictable conditions there.

The “Thorpex” project is studying weather fronts and depressions, which at such northerly latitudes, are so small that they can’t be picked up on satellite pictures.

But they are powerful nonetheless.
