The small Austrian town of Egg has held a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of a fire at a nursing home.
Eleven elderly people died as the flames consumed much of the building.
Police launched a criminal investigation, but say the cause of the fire is not known.
Egg is a small town of some 3,500 people. Many of those knew the victims, and the whole town is in shock.
It is the worst disaster to hit Austria since 155 people died when a mountain train caught fire in a tunnel at Kaprun in 2000.
More than 250 firefighters tackled the fire overnight.
The victims were asleep when the fire started. Most are thought to have died from the effects of smoke. Six of the 23 elderly residents were injured, three of them are seriously ill in hospital.
