Mitt Romney has withdrawn from the campaign in the US to win the Republican party’s nomination for the presidency.

Romney had vowed to fight on after a poor showing in the Super Tuesday round of nomination elections.

But he has now confirmed his withdrawal:

“I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, in this time of war, I feel I now have to stand aside, for our party and for our country,” he told supporters in Washington.

The Super Tuesday results gave Arizona Senator John McCain a commanding lead in the race.

Romney and his advisors had lengthy discussions on whether to continue yesterday.

Mike Huckerbee is now McCain’s main challenger.
