Police in the United States and Italy have arrested more than 80 Mafia suspects, their biggest joint operation in more than 20 years.

They include three alleged senior members of the Gambino crime family in New York.

Over 50 people were arrested in the US this morning, in an operation code-named Old Bridge. Warrants have been issued for at least a further 30 mafia suspects in Italy, mainly in Sicily.

They are accused of murder, racketeering, extortion, loan-sharking and embezzlement.

It is the biggest such sweep since operation Pizza Connection in the 1980s over a Mafia plot to sell heroin and launder the profits through pizza restaurants.
