The first suicide bombing in Israel in more than a year has left one woman dead but officials say the outcome could have been a lot worse. It happened in a shopping centre in the southern Israeli town of Dimona.
Emergency services said the bomber killed himself and an Israeli woman. A second suspected bomber was shot dead by police before he could detonate his device. Ten people were injured.
Israeli security officials suspect the attackers infiltrated from Egypt. Last month, in response to Israel’s clampdown on Gaza, the Hamas group blasted open the border at Rafah, allowing large numbers of Palestinians to cross over.
Two groups including one linked to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah movement said they were behind the attack. Abbas has condemned the bombing which is likely to put pressure on renewed peace talks. Hours after the blast a senior militant was wounded in an Israeli attack in Gaza.
