Senator John McCain wins the Republican Florida primary following a close contest with former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. The victory is worth 57 delegates for McCain in the winner-takes-all primary.
It means that McCain is now the clear Republican favourite going into next weeks “Super Tuesday” when 21 states vote for who will represent the Republicans in the 2008 presidential election, he said, “ Our victory may not have reached landslide proportions, but it is sweet nonetheless. My friends, in one week, we will have as close to a national primary as we have ever had in our country. I intend to win and be the nominee of our party.”
McCain now adds Florida to his wins in South Carolina and New Hampshire.
