Thousands of Palestinians are once again flowing into Egypt unhindered after Egyptian troops pulled back from the breached Gaza border. The soldiers withdrew from the area after a security guard was shot in the foot. Three days after militants blasted open the border in defiance of an Israeli blockade, it is reported troops received orders from Cairo not to enter into confrontation with the Palestinians.
Meanwhile, the leader of Hamas, which controls Gaza, says he is ready for dialogue with the Fatah movement to resolve a Palestinian schism. Egypt has invited both sides to Cairo for talks. The rift between the two sides widened after President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction agreed to re-launch peace talks with Israel.
Yesterday Egyptian forces began putting up barriers and barbed wire to stop more people crossing the Egypt-Gaza border. But Hamas militants put a stop to the efforts. People have been desperately trying to cross the border to buy fuel and food, which has become scarce in Gaza under the Israeli blockade.
