A change of policy by Egypt on letting through Palestinians at the Rafah border crossing has led to violent scuffles. Border guards fired warning shots in the air, used water cannon and formed human chains to try to quell the flow of people. Hundreds of thousands have crossed into Egypt since a breach was blown into the wall separating the two territories early on Wednesday by Palestinian militants.
“Gaza is under siege,” said one Palestinian. “We have no food or drink, we want to get out of Gaza any way possible. Gaza has become like hell, like a big prison, and there is nothing to live off in Gaza.” Israel had tightened its embargo on Gaza last Friday in response to daily attacks by Palestinian militants onto its territory.
