The Republican race is even closer than the Democrats with no clear frontrunner emerging yet. Mitt Romney was the only one of the leading Republican contenders to concentrate his campaigning in Nevada, so his triumph came as no surprise. His rivals focused their efforts on South Carolina, where Romney was seen as have little hope of winning.
But his victory in Nevada did inject new momentum into his bid to win his party’s nomination. John McCain edged out Mike Huckabee to win the South’s first primary election of the current campaign. But the narrowness of McCain’s victory over Huckabee shows there is still a lot to play for as the campaign turns south. Florida is the next stage is the state-by-state election process.
