Spanish police in al Qaeda suspects swoop

Spanish police are reported to have arrested 14 suspected Islamic extremists in Barcelona. State radio said the operation was carried out in conjunction with Spain’s home intelligence services. It is said to be part of an investigation into the alleged financing of al Qaeda-linked groups.

A number of items are also being examined after a raid in the Raval area near the centre of Barcelona. Spain’s Interior Ministry said the investigation was continuing and that further arrests were expected during the day.
