At least two Belgian tourists and two Yemenis accompanying them have been killed in a shooting in eastern Yemen. Another Belgian tourist and a local were injured in the attack in Hadramout province. They were part of a group of around 15. The two Yemenis are believed to have been the group’s driver and one of the guides.
In July, seven Spanish tourists and two Yemenis were killed in a similar attack in the north of the country. Yemen has repeatedly been the scene of killings and kidnappings of foreigners by tribesmen.
The country is viewed by the West as a safe-haven for Islamic militants. It is the birthplace of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Al Qaeda’s wing in Yemen has vowed to free its jailed members and avenge the killings of its fighters.
