After the worst day of bloodshed in Gaza in more than a year, the violence moved to the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Israeli soldiers have shot dead one of the leaders of the Islamic Jihad group there. Two other militants have been injured.
As Palestinians gathered around the ambulance, a grenade exploded nearby, scattering supporters. Senior Islamic Jihad member Walid Obdeidi was killed in the town of Qabatiya near the city of Jenin.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority condemned Israel’s killing of at least 18 people in Gaza as a “slap in the face” for US President George W. Bush’s peace initiative.
