George W Bush arrived in Bahrain, a close US ally, which hosts the American Fifth Fleet, where he was welcomed by King Hamed bin Isa al-Khalifa. Bahrain is the second stop in a five Arab state tour which takes in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Earlier in Kuwait Bush met with the military commander in Iraq General David Petraeus and the US ambassador in Bagdhad, Ryan Crocker. The president delivered an upbeat message about the situation in Iraq, he said “Iraq is now a different place from one year ago. Much
hard work remains, but levels of violence are significantly reduced. Hope is returning to Baghdad, and hope is returning to towns and villages throughout the country.” The United Arab Emirates is next on the US president’s agenda.
