EU diplomats have said a European Union peacekeeping force for Chad and the Central African Republic, could be deployed by mid-February. Eufor was to be sent to the region neighbouring wartorn Sudan in November, but a funding row and a lack of resources delayed preparations.

France is expected to provide some 2,100 of the 3,500-strong force. The mission has a UN Security Council mandate to reinforce some 300 UN police officers monitoring Darfur refugees.

About 234,000 Darfurians, 178,000 Chadians and 43,000 Central Africans uprooted by strife are housed in camps in the region.
