In Georgia, hundreds of opposition demonstrators surrounded the public television station as the re-election of President Mikhail Saakashvili was confirmed by the electoral commission.
The protest organisers have threatened to bring “all of Georgia” onto the streets on Sunday. “We demand media coverage,” said the leader of the opposition coalition, Levan Gachechiladze. “This is an unbearable form of dictatorship. It should not be happening,” he added.
President Saakashvili is continuing to rebuff opposition claims of mass fraud in the January 5 vote. He said that half the world had already congratulated him on his victory. The approval of Western nations is deemed essential by Saakashvili, given his Nato and EU ambitions for Georgia.
