A British police team being sent to investigate Benazir Bhutto’s death should be in Pakistan by this weekend, but Scotland Yard has already identified investigating errors, like her car not being examined for five days after her death, and the lack of interviews with survivors of the suicide bombing.
New videos are coming to light all the time. The latest one shows Bhutto falling into the car before the explosion, but it’s still not clear whether a gunshot, or a fatal blow to the head, led to her death.
Bhutto’s husband refused an autopsy “because of the way they are carried out in Pakistan”.
By calling in top forensic experts from Scotland Yard President Pervez Musharraf
is hoping to head off criticism of his government, as well as accusations that his intelligence services were behind the assassination. The US has said there’s now no need for a UN enquiry.
Conspiracy theories still abound. Not everyone believes the explanation put forward by the president that it was the work of a young Taliban-linked terrorist from the lawless north west border area.
