French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s vacation trip to Egypt, paid for by billionaire friend Vincent Bolloré, is provoking growing controversy in France. The unsuccessful Socialist candidate in last May’s presidential race, Ségolène Royal, has accused Sarkozy of bringing into question the independence and dignity of the presidential office.

She says Sarkozy should stop his provocative and ostentatious behaviour and not be under obligation to billionaires whose business partly depends on the state.

French Socialist Party spokesman Benoit Hamon said Nicolas Sarkozy is a good investment for Bolloré.

The French President travelled to Egypt by private jet with his new girlfriend and reportedly friends and relatives.
