Iraq’s interior minister has sacked the police chief of Baiji after a suicide bomber killed at least 20 people and wounded 80 in the northern Iraqi town. It is thought the attack targeted a security checkpoint on a road leading to a residential compound housing Northern Oil Company staff.
Most of the casualties were civilians, who had been queueing near a petrol station. However, there are conflicting reports over whether those manning the checkpoint included members of local neighbourhood patrols, volunteer fighters who are working with the US military to fight Sunni Islamist al Qaeda.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber killed four people at the funeral of a father and son who had died hours earlier in a shootout with US forces in the city of Baquba, north of Baghdad.
