Danilo Turk takes over as Slovenian President

The new Slovenian President has been sworn-in, in a low key ceremony in Ljubljana.

Danilo Turk took over the reins of power from former President Janez Drnovesek after a decisive win in the election last month.

The ailing outgoing head of state left under a cloud, having accused the government of trying to discredit him for a trip to an Indian healer in a bid to cure his cancer.

The Slovenian President also has a say in foreign policy-making, so it is unlikely to be a relaxing Christmas break for Danilo Turk. Slovenia takes over the EU Presidency for six months from January 1st. At least he is well experienced, having been the Slovenian ambassador to the EU.
