Belgium's political crisis on hold

Belgium’s six-month political crisis has been put on hold, as MPs voted for an interim government.

Parliament supported a team led by former Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, who will now govern for three months, while coalition talks between Dutch- and French-speaking parties continue.

Top of his agenda are urgent measures to tackle rising fuel and food prices, which saw protestors take to the streets last weekend.

The election was 196 days ago, but MPs’ failure to agree an administration led to fears that Belgium might split along linguistic lines.
