The French President and his Palestinian counterpart have said today’s aid donors conference in Paris will be as much about politics as money. Nicolas Sarkozy welcomed Mahmoud Abbas to the Elysée Palace ahead of the meeting, which experts describe as the financial sequel to the US-sponsored meeting in Annapolis last month.
Delegates from 70 countries and 20 global organizations will be present. Their aim: to raise the 5.6 billion dollars needed to fund an economic development plan.
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said there is no way people can have a normal life in Palestine unless this economy is free from restrictions.
“The overall amount which we’re requesting, the 5.6 billion US dollars for the next three years, is an indicator as to how much the conference is needed,” said Fayyad.
It’s understood the US has already pledged 550 million dollars in aid for the Palestinians.
