Winter whitens Italy's (normally) sunny south

The icy winds herald the arrival of winter, and some might think of getting away from it all, by jetting off somewhere warm, like southern Italy. But, this IS southern Italy, and much of the heel and toe of the boot, and the island of Sicily, have been covered in a blanket of snow.

The Mediterranean region is suffering the sort of conditions usually found in the mountains, where skiers can’t get enough.

The cold snap meant a nightmare for hundreds of train passengers heading from Lecce to Rome. The cold knocked out their train near Naples. A replacement loco arrived with the wrong connectors and couldn’t help; a third train rescued them but then also broke down.

Finally, 20 hours later, a local stopping service delivered the exhausted passengers to the Eternal City.
