Spaniards stand together against ETA

world news

| |

Thousands of Spaniards have gathered in Madrid for a massive anti-ETA protest, following a deadly attack at the weekend.

In the first act of national unity of its kind in years, politicians from the ruling Socialist party demonstrated alongside opposition conservatives.

Suspected members of the armed Basque separatist group struck over the border in southwestern France on Saturday.

One Spanish policeman was killed outright. Another is in a coma.

The pair were gunned down in a supermarket car park after a chance encounter with the ETA suspects they had been watching as part of a joint operation with French police.
