The big winner of 2007’s “European Oscars” is Cristian Mungiu.

At last night’s European Film Awards in Berlin, the Romanian picked up the gong for Best European Director.

Mungiu has already been acclaimed by audiences, critics and juries for his film “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”, which was rewarded with the prize of Best European Film.

It premiered at the Cannes film festival in May and ended up running off with the prestigious Palme D’ Or.

“4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” tells the story of a Romanian student who goes for an illegal abortion during the communist regime of Nicolai Ceaucescu. It is the first Romanian entry to receive the award for best film.

Among the other winners was the Briton Helen Mirren who was judged Best European Actress for her role as Elizabeth II in “The Queen”.
