Six civilians, mostly children, and an Italian soldier have been killed in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan. The attack targeted a bridge that Italian troops were helping to build in the capital Kabul. The blast also wounded three other soldiers and a further nine civilians. It is understood the children were among a large group who had gathered around the bridge to watch the construction work.
So far this year Taliban militants have killed at least 200 civilians in suicide attacks in their campaign to drive out more than 50,000 UN-backed foreign troops.
Italy has nearly 2,500 soldiers in Afghanistan, mostly in the west of the country, but also has troops in Kabul involved in reconstruction and development projects.
