French choreographer Maurice Bejart, seen as one of the founders of contemporary dance, has died, aged 80. Born in Marseille, he studied in Paris and London. He danced for the Royal Swedish Ballet and the Ballet de l’Etoile before forming his own company, the Ballet of the 20th Century. He moved to Switzerland in 1987, where he founded the Bejart Ballet Lausanne. He was known for combining classical ballet with modern dance, jazz and acrobatics.
