Pakistani court rejects challenges to Musharraf

The main challenges to President Pervez Musharraf’s election victory last month have been dismissed by Pakistan’s new-look Supreme Court. It is now packed with government-friendly judges, in place since emergency rule was declared. General Musharraf has vowed to quit as army chief and become a civilian president after the court fully clears his re-election.

Benazir Bhutto met the US ambassador to Pakistan today. The former Prime Minister has ruled out further power-sharing talks with General Musharraf because of a lack of trust. Demonstrators meanwhile have been demanding the freeing of another opposition leader, cricketer- turned-politician Imran Khan. He has been in custody since his arrest at Punjab University last week.
