Cricketer turned politician Imran Khan is in custody, facing charges under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws. He was arrested in Lahore at a campus protest against President Pervez Musharraf. The former sportsman had only just emerged from hiding. The Pakistani president meanwhile indicated he has considered resigning but won’t do so unless and until stability returns to his country.
Benazir Bhutto remains under house arrest. Khan’s detention deals a blow to her efforts to forge an opposition alliance. However a fellow former prime minister says he is ready to work with her. Nawaz Sharif’s offer comes despite the pair’s difficult past. He and Bhutto were bitter rivals in the late 1980s and 1990s.
