Pakistan’s cricket hero Imran Khan arrested

Pakistan’s cricket-hero-turned-politician Imran Khan has been arrested in Lahore. He had been in hiding since escaping from house arrest last week. But he reappeared in public at Punjab University, at a student rally against Pakistan’s state of emergency, and was taken into custody by police.

Protests continue against President Musharraf’s security crackdown. Lawyers have been in the forefront of demonstrations against the imposition of emergency rule, which has seen hundreds of their collegues and many judges thrown in jail.

Security remained high in the Lahore district where Benazhir Bhutto is under house arrest, as opposition leaders tried to put together a united front. Miss Bhutto said she would even co-operate with another former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif. The two have long been implacable political rivals.
