Bhutto isolated, and calls on Musharraf to resign

Hundreds of people have been arrested in Pakistan, as opposition supporters tried to begin a protest march. The demonstration was banned under the state of emergency, with President Musharraf flooding the streets with extra police and soldiers. His leading opponent, Benazhir Bhutto, was placed under house arrest in Lahore, to isolate her from her supporters. She called on Musharraf to resign as President, and said she would never work as Prime Minister under him.

The President is also under mounting international pressure. Britain and the Commonwealth told him to end emergency rule, reinstate the constitution and free arrested opponents within ten days, or face the consequences.
