In Slovenia’s runoff presidential election, leftist Danilo Turk is ahead with about 69 percent of the votes cast, according to the first exit polls.

His conservative rival Lojze Peterle has around 30 percent, say the surveys.

Turk has been favourite to take on the largely ceremonial role. The new president will play an active part in international contacts when Slovenia assumes the EU’s rotating presidency next year.
