Security forces across Pakistan remain on high alert to stamp out any sign of demonstrations banned under emergency laws declared on Saturday. In Lahore, lawyers were detained as they tried to stage a protest against the measures. TV footage showed security forces beating people as they were forced into police wagons.
This follows protest marches that turned violent yesterday. Troops in Islamabad have put up razor wire checkpoints near the presidential palace, parliament and Supreme Court. Police have also been vetting lawyers trying to enter the High Court there.
