Relatives express disappointment over verdict

Outside the courtroom, relatives of the victims spoke of their anger that one of the main suspects, “Mohamed the Egyptian” had been cleared of any wrongdoing. But his lawyer, Endkia Zuleta, insisted that his client “had a clean conscience because he’s hasn’t committed any crime.”

For the lawyer of the victims association, the outcome means the investigation has to continue. Jose Maria De Pablo says the acquittal of the only alleged mastermind must mean the real people behind the attack are still at large. Carlos Zoria, one of the people hurt in the attacks, believes the culprits got off too lightly and expects them to be freed after only a few years.

Eighteen other people, including four accused of murder were acquitted but convicted of lesser charges like belonging to a terrorist group.
