Keeping it in the family: Argentina's presidential couple

The ultimate power couple, they have been dubbed the Clintons of the South. Now Cristina is taking top billing in the Kirchner political partnership, becoming Argentina’s first elected woman president. When her husband took office four years ago, she took her place as his top adviser. And, just as Bill backs Hillary, Nestor Kircher has supported his wife’s bid to step into his shoes.

But there are differences within the presidential couple, according to analyst Graciela Romero. She says Cristina polarizes opinion more, while her husband is happy to please everyone across the board. Mrs Kirchner’s political career began long before Mr Kirchner took the top job. A forceful speaker and glamorous dresser, she has been compared to the legendary Eva Peron.

The new president is expected to stay friendly with Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez although she, like her husband, is more moderate than the firebrand socialist. Cristina Kirchner however does have a reputation for stubbornness and impatience and she herself jokes about her confrontational character.
