Two members of the armed Basque separatist group ETA have been given prison sentences of over a thousand years each for a bombing in Madrid 12 years ago. These punishments being purely symbolic, 40 year old Juan Antonio Olarra Guridi and Ahinoa Mugica Goñi, 37, will spend a maximum of 30 years behind bars in accordance with Spanish law.
The pair were arrested by French police at an apartment in Bordeaux in 2002. The car-bombing in the Spanish capital in 1995 killed 6 people and injured 44. The sentencing judges said that the attack was designed to ensure fatalities. ETA, which appears on the EU’s list of terrorist organisations, is blamed for the deaths of 819 people during its 39-year campaign for an independent Basque state.
