Turkish jets attack Kurdish militant positions

world news

| |

It has emerged that Turkish warplanes have been attacking Kurdish rebel targets just inside Iraq. Army sources say several raids have been carried out since Sunday close to the town where 12 Turkish troops were killed in an ambush. As Turkish forces mass on its southern border, Iraq has promised to close the offices of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party and limit its activities on Iraqi soil.

The group – known as the PKK – has been blamed for a series of border clashes with Turkey. PKK rebels also claim to have captured several soldiers during Sunday’s gunbattle. Turkey’s government has been under intense public and military pressure to use force after its parliament approved cross-border incursions.
