The Parliament has applauded a Turkish contribution towards European cinema. Fatih Akin’s The Edge of Heaven won the European Parliament’s first Lux Prize. The award and its Tower of Babel-inspired trophy come with funding to subtitle the German-language film in all 22 other official EU languages.
The film’s leading actress Hanna Schygulla spoke about her director, who could not attend the ceremony. She said: “Fatih Akin has a bridge, like all the others in the Turkish-German generation of today, because they are at least bilingual. German may even be their first language. Like Istanbul, with the Asian part and the European part… they all have this bridge, and so this is a generation that can very ably move integration ahead.”
A scene in which frustration builds to a boiling point is spectacularly punctuated by one of the characters with: “Fuck the European Union!”
