Turkey pursues diplomacy in Kurdish rebel crisis


As the threat of a Turkish offensive on northern Iraq looms, Turkey is pursuing all diplomatic channels to try to defuse the crisis. Under growing public and military pressure to launch an attack on Kurdish seperatists holed up in Iraq, Turkish premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in London for talks with his British counterpart Gordo Brown.

London and Washington have proposed a meeting next month with leaders from the US, Turkey and Iraq to discuss how to stop the attacks by Kurdish rebels. Meanwhile, Turkey’s foreign minister has flown to Baghdad to try to pressure Iraqi and US authorities to crack down on the guerrillas.
