It was 15 years ago that Bosnia’s national library was shelled by Serb artillery, destroying hundreds of thousands of handwritten manuscripts, books, photographs and more. Now Spain has donated one million euros to help pay for the reconstruction work. Culture Minister Cesar Antonio Molina travelled to Sarajevo to sign the agreement.
The roof and the atrium have already been rebuilt, thanks to donations from Austria and the European Union. The century-old building fused Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture. Barely 10 per cent of the books were saved from the flames and the total cost of reconstruction is put at just under eight million euros.
