Women are also believed to have died in attacks which the US military said killed 49 suspected Shi’ite militants in the district of Sadr City. Dozens more people were injured. Sadr City is a poor working-class area of Baghdad. It’s also the stronghold of the Mehdi Army, which is blamed for kidnapping American soldiers, and has regularly clashed with US forces.
The US military would not confirm the civilian deaths, but said they make every effort not to harm innocent people.
