The Turkish Prime Minister is to hold emergency talks with the army this evening, after at least 15 soldiers died in clashes with Kurdish rebels inside Turkey. The military said ten other soldiers were missing, and 15 more had been injured in the clashes near the Iraqi border. Last week, Turkey’s parliament gave the green light for the army to attack the rebels in northern Iraq.
The United States has urged Turkey not to cross into Iraq, saying it would destabilise the relatively-peaceful northern region. Kurdish rebels are blamed for more than 30 thousand deaths since launching an armed campaign for a Kurdish homeland in southern Turkey in 1984.
