For those trying to get to work this morning the day began with a challenge. Across the country people had been warned well in advance but that did not make the situation much easier.

Having battled their way into work commuters face more misery on the journey home.

“It’s unbelievable. There has to be at least a minimum service, says this man,” said one exasperated man in Paris.

“The solution isn’t a strike, it’s work for 42 years years like everyone else,” said another.

On the streets bikes and roller blades replaced buses and trams.

With many choosing alternative forms of transport the strike might at least have some benefits for the environment and for the health of the nation.

One woman was asked by a TV reporter
how far she travelled:

“16 kilometres by bike. I won’t be doing that everyday,” she replied.
