On the streets of Paris, most people seemed fairly unconcerned about their president’s failed marriage despite the wall-to-wall media coverage.

One man said: “I think it is their business. I think it is a private matter. They’re dealing with it properly. They’re trying to affect the French population as little as possible because they are public people. And let them deal with their own problems.”

This woman added: “Well, he has shown he is a human being like everybody else. His extended family is very modern so the divorce goes with it. No, what really surprises me is that a woman gets to be the wife of the president of France – a pretty good situation – and she leaves. It’s unbelievable. She makes me laugh.”

Another woman said: “I’m not really in favour of it but if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work because it’s all about love. That’s love, you can’t force things. So if it doesn’t work they split up and that’s it.”
