There has been dancing on the streets of Paris as England rugby fans celebrated their team’s victory over France in the World Cup semi-final. An estimated 40 000 had flocked to the French capital hopeful that Jonny Wilkinson’s golden boot still had the magic touch.
France had led for most of the match, before slipping out 14 points to 9. England now face either Argentina or South Africa in the final. The Springboks have already hammered the English 36-nil in the group stages. But for all the English celebrations, the host fans were desolate. One newspaper described it as the same nightmare of four years ago, when France lost to England at the same stage of the 2003 world cup in Australia.
